Source Photonics Release Its Smallest Form Factor, Low Power Consumption 50G PON OLT/ONU Series Optical Transceivers at ECOC 2024

50G PON access technology is the primary choice for high-speed PON networks supporting emerging, next-generation applications

West Hills, CA and Frankfurt, Germany – September 22, 2024 – During the 50th European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2024 held in Frankfurt, Germany, Source Photonics, a leading supplier of optical communication modules, announces the release of its small form factor, low-power solution for the next generation high-speed PON networks – the 50G PON OLT SFP56. This product leverages industry-leading optoelectronic chip technology with demonstration to support downstream optical bandwidth of up to 50G NRZ signals and upstream optical/electrical interface line rates of up to 25G burst reception. The optical power budget is designed to cover or be compatible with existing ODN networks. This solution will help operators maximize the value of fiber optics, achieving next-generation bandwidth upgrades while balancing network evolution and cost, further advancing the development of broadband optical access.

50G PON OLT SFP56

With the initiation of F5G-A and China’s “Double 10G Strategies,” large-scale deployment of 50G PON is on the verge of taking off. The 50G PON OLT optical module features the smallest SFP packaging to increase the number of ports per line card for customers, allowing network upgrades without changing the layout of equipment rooms or the number of devices. Leveraging its deep R&D capabilities in EML laser chip technology, Source Photonics has successfully developed an integrated SOA high-power 50G 1342nm EML chip, which is first applied to the 50G PON OLT SFP56 C+ optical module product; the product supports industrial-grade temperatures to meet the demands of network deployment in harsh telecommunication environments. During live demonstration, the Rx burst mode sensitivity was tested below <-28.5dBm under loud-soft environment with stronger Tx reference at -13dBm or higher. These are very competitive results to support existing ODN use cases with good performance margin. Currently, Source Photonics has initiated technical dialogues and sample testing of this product with leading global PON network equipment manufacturers.

50G PON Demo Setup

Simultaneously, Source Photonics is developing SFP-DD packaged 50G/XGSPON dual-mode, 50G/10G EPON, and 50G/XG(S)PON/GPON triple-mode products in small form factor, low-power solutions to aid the commercialization of 50G PON worldwide. The full series of products is planned to reach mass production by the middle of 2025.
